Version 2.3.1 Released

  • Fixed a bug that would cause a crash upon subsequent uses of the Speak feature

I had to update to the latest version of iSpeech to fix this which unfortunately features an ugly pop over while loading:

It’s simply an aesthetic bother and it shouldn’t affect the feature’s functionality.

  • Fixed a bug that would occasionally interrupt starting Study sessions after deleting cards

This might have occurred if you deleted cards from a study session you ended early using the mark to delete feature introduced in the last version.

  • Tweaked Example List searching behavior

The Example List will now properly search the database for whatever is in the Card Detail view’s kanji text field when editing or creating a new card:

Version 2.2.9 Released

  • Added an Auto Font Toggle option

It would’ve been most appropriate for me to call this a setting as it can be found in the Settings app and not on the Options screen:

  • The app will no longer change fonts automatically by default; please go to the Settings app and turn on Auto Font Toggle if you prefer this behavior

I implemented this behavior a couple of years ago when I added in the new fonts because I wanted to make sure users would be aware that they were available. However, a user recently told me that automatically switching fonts is actually just stupid and annoying and…I totally agree. It is stupid and annoying. Thanks to Jebi-sensei for pointing out my silliness. You can still switch fonts by tapping your kanji once it’s displayed on the flash card. You can move back and forth through the fonts you’ve turned on by tapping the left or right half of the kanji section of your card.

  • Tweaked card due date normalizing

It should be about 12% more normal now.

  • Fixed an example and hint bug that might have rarely occurred for some users

I just happened to notice a couple of variables were switched around. I don’t even know if it was really causing a bug but, anyway, I switched ‘em back.

Version 2.2.8 Released

  • Fixed a navigation bar button bug for iPad
  • Added an option to have review cards (memorized cards that were unknown or passed in your previous study session) to all appear first during your subsequent study session

  • Web views (Kanji Koohii searches and Google Image searches) now use Safari web views

You’ll have to sign back in to Kanji Koohii, sorry, but it’s much more convenient and secure for you to use Safari web views.

  • Example imports now build up from the top of your example list rather than down from the bottom

Version 2.2.7 Released

  • Fixed a crash that could occur when deleting lessons

  • Tweaked how the app handles new cards that are passed or marked unknown in study session

Passed new cards will be marked yellow and still be considered to be new. Unknown new cards will be marked red, given an unknown count of 1, and will no longer be considered new.

  • Added a Study Due Variance setting that will randomly add or subtract a day from your cards’ study due dates which may make card shuffles appear to be more random

  • Added a New Card sorting setting to Options so it can be set individually for each lesson

  • Cleaned up the look of the Options screen

  • Removed the Dislike button from Shared Lessons; Lessons will now only be sorted according to Liked count

Version 2.2.6 Released

  • Fixed document name behavior to make sure lessons with names that have special characters aren’t accidentally overwritten

This was covered in a previous post.

  • Fixed card study due date synching behavior on iPad

There may have been some strange behavior when syncing study dates on iPad but it should be inline with the iPhone version now.

  • Added an option to smooth card study dates from the Sync Study Dates button on the Lessons view

You can still turn smoothing on in the Settings app as well but you’ll now have the options to do a one-off smooth from the sync button should the need arise.

  • Added card number limits to Options so that you can set it individually for each lesson

This setting will remain in the Settings app as well, to be used as the default setting for new lessons but you’ll need to set this for your lessons that already exist.

  • Various fixes to ensure iOS 9 compatibility

I think there may have been some problems with font sizes but it should be fixed now.  If you feel that your font sizes are too small you can reset your font cache from the Settings app.  Just turn on the option at the very bottom and you’ll get a message that the cache was reset next time you launch the app.

Where’s my leçon?

A user reported that he inadvertently overwrote one of his documents because he accidentally used the same name when creating a new lesson.

He was wondering why there wasn’t some sort of warning to prevent this.

I clearly remember writing quite a bit of code in order to stop this very scenario from occurring so I did some investigating to find out what the problem was.

I noticed that the user was using document names that had special unicode characters (in this case a ‘ç’) so I checked the documentation to see if there was anything mentioned.  I use the standard isEqualToString: method to compare strings which does indeed clearly state:

The comparison uses the canonical representation of strings, which for a particular string is the length of the string plus the Unicode characters that make up the string. When this method compares two strings, if the individual Unicodes are the same, then the strings are equal, regardless of the backing store. “Literal” when applied to string comparison means that various Unicode decomposition rules are not applied and Unicode characters are individually compared. So, for instance, “Ö” represented as the composed character sequence “O” and umlaut would not compare equal to “Ö” represented as one Unicode character.

Whoops!  I’ve switched over to using localizedCompare: so you can expect the app to properly check document names from version 2.2.6:

Version 2.2.5 Released

  • Reimplemented importing CSV files and exporting CSV to the pasteboard or a file

This broke a couple of patches ago but someone requested it be fixed so I fixed it.

  • CSV exports can now optionally include each cards’ examples

This will make the CSV file have an unequal amount of columns on each row so you should NOT include examples if your software doesn’t support this.

After exporting a CSV file, you can e-mail it or send it to Dropbox (or whatever is available on your phone). If you cancel this, the file will simply show up in your documents list so you can export it from iTunes if you’d prefer:

I’ve uploaded about 10 lessons but it’s says I have 0. Hmm… After a bit of research, it seems that there is a bug in the way that CloudKit is reporting metadata for each file. Apple has stated that this bug will be fixed in iOS version 9.2. Once it’s fixed, any files that you uploaded prior to this version will be accessible again. Any files that you upload now will be available to you immediately. I’m very sorry for any problems this has caused for anyone. Please let me know if there is anything you’d like to see in future versions.
