Introduction<\/h3>\n

During my teen years, I was a “high school refugee” spending 25 days a month in Shibuya.<\/p>\n

I didn\u2019t like my teachers so I barely went to school and I didn\u2019t get along with my family so I didn\u2019t go home. I dyed my hair and hung around Shibuya every day in a super-short mini skirt.<\/p>\n

At the time, I felt like I didn\u2019t fit in. And I was surrounded by friends who gathered in Shibuya because they didn\u2019t fit in.<\/p>\n

How are high school students like that viewed by society?<\/p>\n

Most people don\u2019t pay any attention to high school kids that don\u2019t fit in. Society doesn\u2019t expect anything of them. We avoid contact with those kids hanging around in Shibuya as if we live in different worlds, passing by without letting our eyes meet when we see them on the streets.<\/p>\n

Whether in cities or in the country, young people known as dropouts, shut-ins, and slackers are all lumped together as “the kids these days” and there seems to be a lot of people who\u00a0think those problem kids\u00a0and their behavior has\u00a0nothing to do with them. However, those young people ended up where they are now based on a variety personal struggles. And let us not forget that the society\u00a0forming\u00a0the background\u00a0of\u00a0those struggles is\u00a0the one we made for them.<\/p>\n

It must have been the same throughout the ages, adults grumbling that “the kids these days are no good.”<\/p>\n

And those words scrape away at the potential of our youth.<\/p>\n

The Kids are No Good?<\/h3>\n

Are the kids these days no good?<\/p>\n

As one of those kids, I can’t imagine what the adults that say that kind of thing must’ve been like when they were young. Anyway, what about the adults these days? When I was in high school, I saw a lot of no-good adults. For example, adults like the following.<\/p>\n

One day when I was 16, I went to Shibuya in my school uniform, and was standing on Center Street talking to a friend when a 30-ish looking man started talking to us.<\/p>\n

“I’ll give you 50 bucks if you spit in here for me.”<\/p>\n

The man held out a paper cup in front of us. My friend half-jokingly spit in the cup. When she did, the man slowly pulled a bottle of soda from his bag and mixed it in with the spit in the cup. Then he gulped it down right in front of us, said, “delicious,” handed my friend $50, and left. Thinking about it now, it’s an unbelievably gross story but, at the time, we just thought his strange\u00a0behavior was funny so we busted out laughing and then used the 50 bucks to go to karaoke.<\/p>\n

Besides that, it was a common occurrence to be invited out to dinner or even to a hotel by older men while waiting for my friends in front of Shibuya station at the scramble crossing. I was always amazed that young girls in their school uniforms were being hit on by grown men in suits. There were all kinds of men ranging in age from their 20s to 60s. I never went out with an older guy but some of my friends went along with the younger, good looking ones. Of course, they often felt unsafe hanging out with men they didn\u2019t know and a lot of them actually ended up being victimized.<\/p>\n

People often say that it sounds like a story from a manga or something when I talk about those times. But it\u2019s no story. It really happened and it\u2019s definitely still going on now. Seeing people like that always made me hate adults.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s really the kids that are no good, right?<\/p>\n

I dyed my hair and wore make-up and hung out in Shibuya so rumors started going around school about me and I got a lot of dirty looks from my teachers. At a time when things weren\u2019t going well with my family either, Shibuya was my last escape and the only place I fit in. But the only place I could fit in was overflowing with no-good adults. Every time I was exposed to them, I lost hope in my future and felt hopeless for society.<\/p>\n

More than that, since I was one of “the kids these days” being lamented by the adults supporting that society, I began to lose track of what I was living for.<\/p>\n

Separate Societies for the Young and Old<\/h3>\n

What I want to say isn’t that adults these days are no good or young people are no good. Rather, I want to ask the adults complaining about the kids these days how many of them have had any involvement with those kids and I wonder if any of them understand, and not just superficially, but truly grasp the current situation the kids these days face, what their lives are like, what kinds of problems they have, and what underlies those problems. It’s likely that most adults haven’t had the chance to interact with today’s youth. There probably aren’t very many people that can confidently say they know what reality is like for young people these days.<\/p>\n

When I was in high school, I thought adults just didn’t get it so I promised myself that when I grew up, I wouldn’t forget what my experiences and struggles were like. In the future, I wanted people to know about and understand what reality was like for young people like me.<\/p>\n

But even me, being 22 now and having left that lifestyle behind for a few years, I’m gradually forgetting more and more what that reality was like. So I know it must not be easy for adults that don’t have any contact with young people to understand them.<\/p>\n

Looking back on those years, those of us hanging out in Shibuya decided to make our own society since we had given up on living in the one that the clueless adults had made. When young people give up on gaining the understanding of adults and start making and living in their own world, it gets harder and harder for people to understand them. The idea that we don\u2019t get the kids these days makes us give up on trying to understand them. In the end, we become indifferent. That’s how the gap between the young and old widens.<\/p>\n

The societies of the young and old are separated.<\/p>\n

And that’s why I want to write this book now while I’m still a college student.<\/p>\n

In this book, as a “young person” that’s no longer a child but not yet an adult, I want to convey what reality is like for the kids these days that I\u2019ve met.<\/p>\n

High School Refugees<\/h3>\n

Life during my first year of high school was as follows.<\/p>\n

I woke up after lunch every day. I didn’t want to see my family so I’d leave my room when I figured they had all gone out. I’d get on the train in a bad mood and go to school to show my face a bit in afternoon classes just so I could earn a day of attendance. After school, I’d head to Shibuya with my friends and hang out until night time. I had a lot of friends in Shibuya and we’d go to karaoke or take print club pictures, we’d chit chat with the clerks at accessory shops and the guys working for pubs whose job was to pull in customers off the street, or we’d just kill time hanging out at fast food places. We didn’t want to go home so we’d try to figure out how we could stay out late without spending much money. We’d go out drinking with college guys that would buy us dinner and, if we missed the last train, we’d call older guys we had gotten to know that would give us a ride home.<\/p>\n

I was always doing stuff with friends who, like me, didn\u2019t fit in. We’d spend the night at internet cafes, or stay out all night at karaoke, or, when we didn’t have money, just wait out the morning half-sleeping in fast food joints or even spread out some cardboard and sleep in a park or on a roof somewhere. I had a lot of friends that were living like that.<\/p>\n

I call them high school refugees. High school students that are like I used to be, that can’t go home or to school and feel like they don\u2019t fit in anywhere.<\/p>\n

At the time, my friends and I were refugees that had lost our places at home and school. High school students whose lives revolve around going back and forth between home and school only have a limited number of personal relationships. Once they no longer fit in there, they have nowhere else to go. Whether at home or school I didn\u2019t feel settled, I didn\u2019t have a safe place to spend time or sleep so, like all the other high school kids that felt they didn\u2019t fit in, I started spending my days in Shibuya.<\/p>\n

For me, Shibuya was the last place I felt like I belonged. That place was like a hidden, formless refugee camp.<\/p>\n

According to Mr. Makoto Yuasa at Moyai, an NPO that deals with the working poor and poverty issues, “Poverty is a situation in which one lacks reserves” (Poverty Invasion, Yamabuki Shoten).<\/p>\n

In his book, Yuasa claims that financial reserves, relationship reserves, and emotional reserves are necessary to avoid falling into poverty. If you lose your job, you can continue living off of your savings for a while if you have financial reserves and your parents and friends from your relationship reserves might be able to introduce you to a new job or let you stay with them until you start working again. Emotional reserves are believing in yourself, and having a bit of leeway when it comes to your self-confidence. It seems that there are even people with no financial reserves who have been able to rely solely on their relationship and emotional reserves.<\/p>\n

The high school refugee problem is the same. They lack reserves.<\/p>\n

Most high school students\u2019 lives revolve around the back and forth between family and school. If for some reason their family and school connections collapse and they lose those relationship reserves, they also immediately lose their place in the world.<\/p>\n

High school students that have lost their place at home and school start living a life where no one is looking out for them and a lot of dangerous temptations await.<\/p>\n

I met a lot of bad people in Shibuya and I saw numerous cases of underage girls being coerced into nightlife and prostitution work. High school students that can’t go home need money to hang out and have a place to sleep but they don’t have any financial reserves. So female high school refugees hang out with men that will treat them to dinner and give them a place to stay or they end up doing nightlife work because the money is good. Unfortunately, men that are willing to give these girls a place to stay are just after one thing and the good paying jobs are all asking them to sell their youth and bodies. Male high school refugees make quick money by working as impersonators on dating sites or shills in pachinko parlors or they start working as hosts at bars. The good paying jobs for them are all dangerous too.<\/p>\n

These emotionally wounded high school refugees who’ve lost their place at home and school go on living like this and begin to worry, “What am I doing?” “Where am I gonna go from here?” They lose their emotional reserves, no longer believe in themselves, and start thinking, “I’m no good.” At some point, I too lost hope in myself and society and I even thought that I wanted to die.<\/p>\n

I knew nothing would change as long as I kept living like that and I wanted to escape from it but I didn\u2019t know what I should do.<\/p>\n

After Being a High School Refugee<\/h3>\n

In the summer of my sophomore year, I quit school and, for a while, I kept living like that. Luckily, I met someone that helped me change. Through a variety of experiences and encounters, I was able to obtain relationship and emotional reserves and then I went to college. Now I’m working to build a place where young people and society can start connecting.<\/p>\n

I’m writing this book now because I think it\u2019s important to tell people about high school refugees and their problems. Their existence is not a temporary issue. The high school refugee problem will be passed on to the next generation.<\/p>\n

Most of the friends I was hanging out with in Shibuya all those years ago weren\u2019t able to escape that lifestyle. Even now in their 20\u2019s, they still don\u2019t fit in and are just making a living as day laborers and part-time dispatch workers or working at nightlife places like cabaret clubs or even in the sex industry.<\/p>\n

In high school, you start doing work like part-timing as an impersonator for dating sites or waiting tables in a revealing uniform that looks like a bikini or something without giving it much thought because it pays well. You keep doing that for a while then you progress to working in cabaret clubs or at host bars because you want an even better salary. There aren\u2019t many high school students that start out thinking they want to sell their bodies, but once you start doing those part-time jobs you begin to think, “Well, I\u2019ve already come this far\u2026” “There\u2019s no other job I can do\u2026” You just give up or don\u2019t care anymore, convince yourself that your body\u2019s not going anywhere, and then you end up in the nightlife or sex industry. Even if they think they can\u2019t keep going like that, they don\u2019t know what to do and, since they lack reserves, they don\u2019t have anyone to go to. College students that start working part-time at cabaret clubs to save money towards some goal are different than the girls that end up falling into that world while they\u2019re still in high school.<\/p>\n

Now in their 20\u2019s, they may have more money than they did when they were students, but a lot of them are in unstable work, so it isn\u2019t enough to be considered a financial reserve. And, just like when they were in high school, they don\u2019t have any relationship or emotional reserves to rely on so they haven\u2019t been able to escape from the don\u2019t-fit-in lifestyle. I know a lot of former high school refugees like that.<\/p>\n

Since they don\u2019t even know what other kinds of options are available to them, they just keep going on in the same way and only ever get to start relationships with those living in the same world. And so more and more they become unable to escape from the no-reserve, refugee lifestyle.<\/p>\n

High school students that become refugees turn into reserve-lacking adults that then fall into poverty. When adults that don\u2019t know how to create their own reserves become parents, they pass their poverty on to their children.<\/p>\n

Refugee Prevention<\/h3>\n

In order to stop this succession of poverty, it\u2019s necessary to ensure that high school refugees don\u2019t grow into adulthood in a reserve-lacking state. It\u2019s also necessary to prevent at-risk students, those that lack reserves outside of their home and school lives, from becoming refugees.<\/p>\n

What the refugees and those at-risk need is the creation of some relationship reserves outside of the home and school as well as a build up of emotional reserves.<\/p>\n

In order to prevent the increase of high school refugees, adults have to regard young people as individual members of society, understand their circumstances and the situations they\u2019ve been placed in, and take another look at what\u2019s underlying those situations.<\/p>\n

As a first step towards that, I want to let readers know about the existence of high school refugees.<\/p>\n

In this book, I\u2019d like to tell you how I became a high school refugee, how I escaped that situation, and what kind of life I\u2019m living now. I hope this book can help readers understand the problems of the kids these days and the issues underlying those problems, and I hope it becomes an impetus to reevaluate what each of us as individuals can do to help.<\/p>\n
